CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive game after a 52-42 loss to Westfield State College on Saturday. Christa Margossian led the Engineers (3-5) with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Sharon Prange posted the first basket of the game after three minutes had expired. The Owls evened the contest on their next possession. A three-point play and a jumper by Margossian put Tech ahead, 7-4, at 14:19. Westfield State responded with a 21-3 run that spanned 10 minutes to build its largest lead of the half (25-10). The Owls went on to enter the intermission with a 29-16 advantage.
MIT was able to narrow its deficit to seven (33-26) on a jumper by Kimberly Soo Hoo at the 12:46 mark. Westfield State sank a three-pointer on its next possession, which was followed by a basket by the Engineers' Amy Marshall with 11:38 to go. The Owls outscored MIT, 13-6, during the next nine minutes to establish a 17-point lead (51-34). Baskets by Prange, Margossian, and Clara Yuan narrowed the gap to 10 (51-41) with 1:22 left to play. The Engineers recorded three consecutive fouls to put Westfield State in the bonus. The Owls converted one of its four attempts during the final 48 seconds as Marshall posted Tech's final point from the charity stripe.
Marshall finished the night with nine points on 7-of-10 shooting from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds and three steals. Soo Hoo tallied 10 points and four assists while Prange notched eight points and seven rebounds.
