WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – In the season finale for the MIT women's lightweight crew team, the Engineers made an appearance at the 2014 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, held on Lake Mercer. MIT qualified both its Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats, with both crews starting action on Saturday.
First up for the Cardinal and Grey was the Varsity 8 crew, racing in the second heat of its event on Saturday. MIT took fourth in 7:05.822, putting the Engineers in the repêchage later in the day. Princeton and Wisconsin took the top two spots in the repêchage with MIT finishing about six and a half seconds behind the Badgers in 7:24.742 for a third-place finish that moved the Engineers to the Petite Final on Sunday.
In the Petite Final MIT squared off in a three-boat race with Tulsa and Georgetown. In the end over the 2,000-meter course it came to down to a battle between the Engineers and the Golden Hurricane, with MIT coming out on top by over five seconds with its time of 6:53.134.
MIT's Varsity 4 crew started its racing on Saturday in Heat 1. Rowing against strong teams from Stanford and Fordham, the Engineers finished third in 8:13.076, putting them in the repêchage later in the morning. There MIT just missedout by less than a second from advancing to the Finals, as the Engineers turned in an 8:34.795 that was just 0.844 behind Princeton for the final spot.
