Women’s Lightweight Crew Announces 2014-15 Freshman Class

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A group of seven incoming freshmen will be added to the roster of the MIT women's lightweight crew program the coaching staff has announced. The class will add their talents to a team that won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Dad Vail Regatta and finished the 2014-15 season ranked No. 7 in the country.

"We're excited to welcome this talented group of athletes to the program", said Amelia Booth, the team's Novice Coach. "We are looking to them to increase our squad depth and competitiveness in their first year as Engineers!"

Emma DeSoto (Seattle, Wash., Lakeside School): Lettered all four years in crew … part of a light 4+ crew that was first in the Northwest (2011-12), seventh nationally (2011) and fourth nationally (2012) … also lettered twice in swimming … National Merit Finalist … AP scholar with honor … Presidential Nominee.

Michelle Lauer (Seattle, Wash., Lakeside School): Two-time captain of her high school rowing team … first-place at USRowing Northwest Junior Regional Championships in Lightweight 4+ (2012) … fourth-place at USRowing Youth National Championships in Lightweight 4+ (2012) … also participated in swimming and soccer … AP Scholar with Distinction … AIME second in state (12th grade class).

Liz Martin (Lexington, Mass., Buckingham Browne & Nichols School): Girls First Varsity Four (2013-14) … placed 28th in 2013 Head of the Charles Youth Fours … eighth in New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships (NEIRAs) in 2013 … competed with Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) at Club Nationals (2012-13) … placed fifth in Junior B 8+ Event (2012) … also participated in figure skating as a member of the Skating Club of Boston … US Figure Skating Gold Medalist … National Spanish Honor Society … Tri-M Music Honor Society … National Merit Scholarship Commended Scholar … AP Scholar with Honor … BB&N Citation of Honor … Honorable Mention in 2012 Jersey Shore Science Fair … Cellist in BB&N Orchestra … danced classical ballet for 10 years … intern at MIT Tsai Lab … teaches Learn-to-Skate at the Skating Club of Boston.
