CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's openweight crew team returned to its home course on the Charles River on Saturday to take on crews from the University at Buffalo, University of Massachusetts and Simmons College. The Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 boats each earned second -place finishes with strong races while the 2nd and 3rd Varsity 8 crews came in third out of four teams.
In the Varsity 8 race, Tech led Buffalo for most of the race, pulling ahead by as much as a full length at the 1000-meter mark. Buffalo continued to move up in the second half of the race and overtook the Engineers with a spring in the final 500 meters, winning by less than a half of a second. Buffalo finished with a time of 7:17.8 with MIT coming in right behind in 7:18.2. UMass was third followed by Simmons.
The Varsity 4 also had a strong race, battling the UMass "B" boat the entire way before coming out on top by the slimmest of margins. The top UMass boat took first overall but the Cardinal and Gray finished in second at 8:38.2. The second UMass boat finished in 8:38.5 while Buffalo took fourth place.
In the 2V8, MIT was solid for the first half of the race, overlapping the two leading crews for the first 1000 meters. The crew had a difficult time dealing with a strong crosswind in the latter portion of the race falling a length behind UMass while Buffalo pulled away to win the race. The Engineers took third in 7:33.3.
In the final event of the day, MIT's 3rd Varsity 8 rowed against the 3V from Simmons along with freshman eights from UMass and Buffalo. Buffalo moved ahead early on while Tech stayed close with UMass for the first 1000 meters before falling back by a length at the end.
Head coach Holly Metcalf was pleased with her team's performance, saying "All of our crews experienced very competitive races, which is exactly what we needed to prepare us for the Patriot League Championship next week. Hats off to Buffalo for an amazing performance overall, and especially in the varsity eight race."
The Cardinal and Gray will compete at the Patriot League Championship next Sunday, April 29 on the Cooper River in Chery Hill, N.J. MIT finished fourth of six crews last season as Bucknell took home the Patriot League title.
