NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - In the team's season-opener last Saturday, eighteen fencers represented the MIT's women's fencing program at The Big One Fencing Tournament at Smith College. The event featured individual competition in a field of participants from over twenty schools, including several Division I and Division II programs. The Engineers finished with seven top-ten performances across the three events.
In foil, senior Cordelia Link took the bronze in the field of 78. Jenna Caldwell (10th) and Julia Hopkins (19th) also placed in the top twenty, with Lindley Graham (21st) close behind them. Ana Escalante (42nd) and Julia Kimmerly (52nd) also competed for the Engineers.
At epee, senior Stephanie Shin paced the Engineers with a sixth place finish. Kirsten Hessler (10th) and Sophie Monahan (20th) also finished strong for MIT.
MIT put three fencers in the quarterfinals of saber, with sophomore Molly Kozminsky edging out Elena Tatarchenko and Annabeth Gellman as the trio ranked sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. Laura Evans (29th), Jennifer Fasman (48th), Jenny Allen (50th) and Crystal McKenzie (53rd) rounded out the Engineers in the field of 69.
MIT squares off in its first team competition on Saturday, November 21, when it travels to Brown University to face UMass, UNH, Tufts, Boston University, Brandeis and Wellesley.
