MIT Defeats Brandeis at Beanpot Invitational
BOSTON, Mass. – At the annual Beanpot Invitational hosted by Harvard University, the MIT women's fencing team defeated Brandeis University (17-10) but fell to Boston College (18-9) and Harvard (21-6) on Tuesday. The sabre squad compiled a total of 14-13, followed by the epee team (11-16), and the foil unit (8-19).
Junior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) had the best outing for the Engineers as she won eight of her nine bouts in the sabre competition. Senior Molly Kozminsky (Port Matilda, Pa.) and junior Elisabeth Morant (Chicago, Ill.) completed the contingent with marks of 4-5 and 2-7, respectively. As a team, MIT defeated Brandeis (7-2) and BC (5-4) but lost to Harvard (7-2).
The epee squad edged out Brandeis, 5-4, and was defeated by Harvard (5-4) and BC (7-3). Freshman Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way with a tally of 5-4 while senior Kirsten Hessler (Roswell, Ga.) came in at 4-5. Senior Breanna Peterman (Selden, N.Y.) went 1-5 as classmate Rachel Williams (Merritt Island, Fla.) lost the three bouts she competed in.
The foil squad also picked up a 5-4 win over Brandeis and had tough losses to BC (6-3) and Harvard (9-0). Senior Julia Hopkins (New York, N.Y.) paced the Cardinal and Gray with a 4-5 performance while classmate Ana Escalante (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a mark of 3-6. Junior Julia Kimmerly (Middlesex, Vt.) contributed a total of 1-2 as freshman Rebecca Shi (Plainsboro, N.J.) rounded out the squad with a ledger of 0-6.
MIT (13-12) begins its postseason push on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the New England Championship hosted by Vassar College.
