Women’s Fencing Has Impressive Outing at Sollee Invitational
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a 4-2 performance last week in a Northeast Fencing Conference competition, the MIT women's fencing team equaled this mark at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers defeated Hunter College (24-3), Yeshiva University (26-1), Haverford College (22-15), and Stevens Institute of Technology (14-13) but fell to NYU (14-13) and University of Pennsylvania (18-9).
The sabre squad dominated the field as it went 44-10 courtesy of sweeps of Hunter and Yeshiva, comfortable victories over Haverford (8-1), NYU (7-2), and Stevens (6-3), in addition to a 5-4 decision versus Penn. Senior Robin Shin (Brookline, Mass.) won all 18 of her bouts while freshman Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) posted a total of 12-6. Senior Annabeth Gellman (Ridgewood, N.J.) had an 11-4 performance as sophomore Eliza Mace (Lansdowne, Va.), in her only action of the day, defeated all three of her opponents from Yeshiva.
Freshmen Mounica Paturu (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) powered the epee team with marks of 15-3 and 13-5, respectively. Sophomore Sarah Alkilany (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished at 11-6 as freshman Manting Lao (Columbus, Ohio) defeated her rival from Yeshiva. The Engineers tallied a record of 40-14 by sweeping Hunter and Yeshiva and overpowering Haverford (8-1) and Stevens (6-3) while dropping a pair of 5-4 battles to NYU and Penn.
The foil team dismissed Yeshiva (8-1), Hunter (6-3), and Haverford (6-3) en route to a 24-30 outing. Sophomore Rebecca Shi (Plainsboro, N.J.) led the way with a total of 10-8 as senior Julia Kimmerly (Middlesex, Vt.) notched a ledger of 9-9. Sophomore Sherry Ren (Katy, Texas) defeated two of her four opponents while freshman Ceri Riley (Kirkland, Wash.) went 3-11.
Next up for MIT (14-10) will be its first appearance in five years at the Duke University Invitational to be held February 9-10.
