Cordelia Avery Finishes 13th at NCAA Fencing Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio – In her NCAA Fencing National Championship debut, MIT freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) finished 13th out of a field of 24 in the sabre competition on Friday. The lone Division III qualifier, she produced the Engineers’ best sabre performance since Caroline Purcell ’02 was 11th in 2002.

Rafidi and Avery to Represent MIT at NCAA Fencing Championship
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row, senior Joey Rafidi (Los Angeles, Calif.) will represent MIT at the NCAA Fencing Championship and he will be joined by freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) at the competition scheduled to begin this Thursday at Ohio State. Qualifiers for epee and sabre, Rafidi and Avery are the lone Division III participants in their respective weapons.

Cordelia Avery Finishes Fourth at NCAA Fencing Regional
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) captured fourth place in the sabre competition to lead the MIT women’s fencing team at the NCAA Northeast Regional hosted by Wellesley College on Sunday. Her performance, which was also the best among Division III sabre participants, will put her in a good position to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Championship to be held March 20-23.

Avery and Li Lead MIT at New England Championship
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Freshmen Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) and Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) both secured third place in sabre and foil, respectively, as the MIT women’s fencing team finished fourth out of 14 squads at the New England Championship hosted by Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. Sophomore Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) bolstered the sabre squad with a fourth-place performance while classmates Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) and Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) secured seventh and eighth place for the epee unit.

Rookies Earn NFC All-Star Honors for Women's Fencing
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women’s fencing team saw freshmen Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) and Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) receive All-Star accolades from the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) on Monday. Avery claimed a spot on the Sabre First Team while Li was selected to the Foil Second Team.

Women's Fencing Wraps Up Regular Season at the Beanpot
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – At its only home event of the season, the MIT women’s fencing team fell to a trio of local foes in the Beanpot on Wednesday night. The Engineers (9-22) were edged out by Brandeis University (14-13) and were topped by Harvard (20-7) and Boston College (16-11). Freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) went a perfect 9-0 in sabre action as the contingent finished at 14-13 on the evening.

Engineers Battle at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – Competing at the Duke University Invitational, the MIT women’s fencing suffered several tough losses in a highly competitive field on Sunday. The Engineers (9-19) were defeated by UNC (16-11), the host Blue Devils (16-11), Brandeis University (14-13), the U.S. Air Force Academy (15-12), and Temple University (20-7). The Cardinal and Gray, however, recorded several strong individual performances as post-season action will unfold in the next few weeks.

Sabre Shines for Women's Fencing at Sollee Invitational
WALTHAM, Mass. – The MIT women’s fencing team went 2-3 at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday as it topped Hunter College (22-5) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (20-7) but was edged out by Stevens Institute of Technology (14-13), NYU (14-13), and Haverford College (15-12). The sabre squad had an undefeated outing as freshman Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) led the way with ledgers of 12-1 and 13-2, respectively. Freshman Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) paced the foil contingent for the second straight week with a tally of 13-2 while sophomores Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) and Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) both finished with marks of 10-5 for the epee unit.

Women's Fencing Picks Up Two Wins at NFC Competition
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – In its return to action following a nearly two-month hiatus, the MIT women’s fencing team defeated Vassar College (15-12) and Smith College (22-5) at the second Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition of the season on Saturday. The Engineers (7-11, 6-6 NFC) were edged out by host Boston College (15-12) and Dartmouth College (14-13) while also suffering losses to Tufts University (18-9) and Brown University (24-3). Freshman Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) had the best individual performance of the day as she went 15-3 in foil action while sophomores Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) and Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) turned in 12-6 performances for the epee and sabre units, respectively.

WALTHAM, Mass. – At the highly competitive Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday, the MIT women’s fencing team defeated St. John’s University (14-13) but fell to Yale University (17-10), Cornell University (16-11), Johns Hopkins University (14-13), Brown University (20-7), and Columbia University (20-7).

Women’s Fencing Goes 4-2 in NFC Opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In its first Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season, the MIT women’s fencing team went 4-2 at Brown University on Saturday. The Engineers (4-2) overpowered Boston University (21-6), Wellesley College (22-5), UMass Amherst (22-5), and University of New Hampshire (18-9) but fell to Brandeis University (17-10) and Sacred Heart University (15-12).

Douglas and Paturu Lead Women's Fencing at The Big One
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomores Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) and Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) led the way for the MIT women’s fencing team at The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. Douglas captured the bronze medal in the sabre competition as she tied for third place while Paturu secured fifth place in the epee field.
