Engineers Pick Up Five Wins in NFC Competition

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's fencing team went 5-1 in its first Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) competition of the season on Saturday. The Engineers were edged out by Sacred Heart University (15-12) but defeated Wellesley College (21-6), Brandeis University (17-10), University of New Hampshire (21-6), UMass (25-2), and Boston University (20-7).

The sabre squad compiled a record of 48-6 by sweeping UNH, UMass, and BU, defeating Wellesley and Brandeis by 8-1 margins, and topping Sacred Heart, 5-4. Sophomore Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) won 16 of her 17 bouts while junior Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) was 16 of 18 on the day. Freshman Cori Drysdale (Coral Springs, Fla.) went 3-0 against UMass, registered 2-1 outings versus Wellesley, Brandeis, and Sacred Heart, and defeated both of her opponents from BU to finish at 12-3. Senior Eliza Mace (Lansdowne, Pa.) notched two victories over UNH and added wins against UMass and BU for a mark of 4-0.

Sophomore Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) led the foil team with a 16-2 performance by blanking Wellesley, UNH, Sacred Heart, and UMass in addition to going 2-1 against Brandeis and BU. Freshman Sophia Russo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) amassed a ledger of 13-5 on the strength of 3-0 marks versus Brandeis, UNH, UMass, and BU while senior Sherry Ren (Beijing, China) registered 2-1 totals against UNH and UMass for a 4-2 record. Freshman Carolyn Lu (Carlisle, Mass.) ended the day at 3-9, bolstered by a 2-1 tally versus UMass. As a squad, MIT defeated UNH (8-1), UMass (8-1), BU (7-2), Wellesley (5-4), and Brandeis (5-4) for an overall record of 36-18.

With 8-1 scores against Wellesley and UMass in addition to 4-5 marks versus the remaining four teams, the epee contingent generated a ledger of 32-22. Junior Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) led the way with a total of 12-6 courtesy of 3-0 outings against Wellesley and UMass to go along with 2-1 performances versus UNH and BU. Junior Laura Jarin-Lipschitz (Rosemont, Pa.) went 2-1 against Wellesley, Brandeis, UNH, and Sacred Heart while also picking up victories over UMass and BU to finish at 11-4. Freshman Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) blanked Wellesley and added a 2-1 tally versus UMass en route to a final record of 8-9 while classmate Amelia Bryan (Tualtin, Ore.) contributed a win over UMass.

MIT returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 7 when it travels to the Brandeis University Invitational.
