  • Four From MIT Earn CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Awards

    AUSTIN, Texas (June 6) – Four MIT student-athletes – two men and two women - have earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America At-Large Division III accolades. Women’s swimming and diving senior Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was placed on the First Team, women’s fencing sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) and men’s lacrosse senior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) were placed on the Second Team and men’s swimming and diving junior Joshua Tomazin (Austin, Texas) earned a spot on the third team.
  • MIT Receives Four CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large Selections

    AUSTIN, Texas (May 11) – Four MIT student-athletes were recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as they were all selected to the Academic All-District Team on Thursday afternoon. Men’s Lacrosse senior Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) and men’s swimming and diving junior Joshua Tomazin (Austin, Texas) were repeat honorees, while women’s swimming and diving senior Veronika Jedryka (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and women’s fencing sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) both made the list for the first time. All four will represent the Engineers on the national ballot and will contend for Academic All-America honors, which will be voted on and released on June 6, 2017.
  • Jessica Li and Helen Sakharova Named NFC All-Stars

    Senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) represented MIT on the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Star Team. Li was tabbed to the Foil First Team while Sakharova secured a spot on the Epee First Team.
  • Sakharova Finishes 24th Overall at NCAA Fencing Championship

    MIT sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) concluded her first trip to the NCAA Fencing Championship by placing 24th in the epee standings. In Sunday’s action, she defeated Jessie Gottesman-Radanovich (Penn State) but lost five bouts by a 5-4 margin.
  • Sakharova Ranks 17th After First Day of NCAA Championship Action

    Following the conclusion of the first three rounds of epee competition on Saturday, MIT sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) ranked 17th out of 24 epee participants at the NCAA Fencing Championship. The lone Division III qualifier, she compiled a record of 6-9 to help her move up the standings during her national debut.
  • MIT’s Helen Sakharova Receives NCAA Elite 90 Award

    MIT sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) is the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2017 NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championship. She is the first female Division III fencer and third MIT fencer to earn this award. The Engineers currently lead all Division III institutions with 10 honors since the program was established during the 2009-10 academic year.
  • Helen Sakharova Selected to Compete at NCAA Fencing Championship

    Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) will represent the MIT women’s fencing team at the NCAA Championship to be held March 25-26 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The lone Division III epee competitor in a field of 24 participants, she will be making the Engineers’ first national appearance since 2014.
  • Helen Sakharova Captures Eighth Place at NCAA Regional

    At the NCAA Fencing Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday, MIT sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) secured eighth place in the epee competition, resulting in the highest Division III performance for the weapon. Senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) ranked 17th in foil, marking the best finish in her career. In her first appearance at the event, sophomore Amnahir Peña-Alcántara (New York, N.Y.) placed 35th among the sabre qualifiers.
  • Women's Fencing Claims Second Place at New England Championship

    For the second year in a row the MIT women’s fencing team captured second place at the New England Championship hosted by the University of Vermont on Saturday. Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) repeated as epee champion while the unit finished first overall. Senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) was the foil runner-up while junior Sophia Russo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) tied for third place for the second straight year. Sophomore Amnahir Peña-Alcántara (New York, N.Y) had the best performance for sabre team with her 11th-place finish.
  • Women's Fencing Wraps Up Regular Season at the Beanpot

    The MIT women’s fencing team closed out the regular season at the 10th Annual Beanpot hosted by Boston College on Wednesday night. The Engineers (15-16) fell to the host Eagles (16-11), Harvard (23-4), and Brandeis University (15-12). Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) powered the epee team with a 7-2 ledger while senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) registered a team-best tally of 4-5 for the foil unit. Junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) generated the best performance for the sabre squad as she went 2-7 on the day.
  • Foil Unit Leads the Way for Women's Fencing at Duke Invitational

    Battling against Division I opponents at the Duke Invitational on Sunday, the MIT women’s fencing team fell to the host Blue Devils (22-5), University of North Carolina (18-9), the U.S. Air Force Academy (16-11), Northwestern University (21-6), and Boston College (17-10). The foil squad turned in a 24-21 performance, led by senior Jessica Li’s (Englewood, Colo.) tally of 8-3. Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) paced the epee contingent with a 5-7 mark while junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) went 3-12 for the sabre team.
  • Epee Squad Powers Women’s Fencing at Eric Sollee Invitational

    The epee squad went undefeated in helping the MIT women’s fencing team produce a 4-2 record at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers (15-8) defeated Hunter College (20-7), NYU (14-13), Yeshiva University (27-0), and Haverford College (20-7) but fell to Duke University (19-8) and Stevens Institute of Technology (15-12). Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) won 13 of her 14 epee bouts while senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) paced the foil team with a 10-2 ledger. Sophomore Amnahir Peña-Alcántara turned in the best performance for the sabre squad with a tally of 6-7.
  • Women's Fencing Has 4-1 Outing at NFC Competition

    In its return to action, the MIT women's fencing team generated a 4-1 performance at the Northeast Fencing Conference competition hosted by Brown University on Saturday. The Engineers defeated Tufts University (17-10), Dartmouth College (21-6), Vassar College (17-10), and Brown (15-12) but fell to Boston College (15-12), moving their record to 11-6 overall and 10-2 in the conference. Senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) won 14 of her 15 foil bouts while sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Tesla Wells (Phoenix, Ariz.) both produced 11-3 ledgers for the epee team. Junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) paced the sabre team with a 7-8 mark.

    Facing a lineup of Division I opponents, the MIT women’s fencing team generated a 1-4 ledger at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers (7-5) defeated Brown University (16-11) but fell to Yale University (19-8), St. John’s University (20-7), Cornell University (21-6), and the University of North Carolina (16-11). Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) paced the epee unit with an 11-4 record as senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore Cheyenne Hua (New York, N.Y.) both turned in 8-7 performances for the foil team. Junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) led the way for the sabre squad with a total of 6-9.
  • Women's Fencing Goes 6-1 in NFC Opener

    Cambridge, Mass. (November 19) - The MIT women's fencing team kicked off Northeast Fencing Conference action with a 6-1 performance in the Johnson Athletic Center on Saturday. The Engineers topped UMass Amherst (17-10), University of New Hampshire (23-4), Boston University (18-9), Wellesley College (18-9), Brandeis University (17-10), and Smith College (22-5) with their lone loss coming at the hands of Sacred Heart University (14-13). Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) won all 12 of her epee bouts while senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) and freshman Oliva Koslow (San Francisco, Calif.) both went 8-1 for the foil squad. Junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) led the way for the sabre team with a 13-8 ledger.
  • Li Claims Gold, Nunn Captures Silver at The Big One Invitational

    NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women's fencing team generated five top-10 placements in the season opening The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. Senior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) won the foil competition while freshman Taiylor Nunn (Westport, Conn.) was the epee runner-up. Sophomore Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) was sixth in epee while freshmen Karen Gu (East Hanover, N.J.) and Olivia Koslow (San Francisco, Calif.) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the foil standings. Competing in sabre for the first time after representing the Engineers in epee and foil, junior Nicole Kogan (New Haven, Conn.) had the best showing for the squad by ranking 15th.
