Women's Fencing Posts 4-1 Mark at MIT-Brandeis Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's fencing team emerged with a 4-1 ledger in the MIT-Brandeis Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers (14-5) opened the day with a 24-3 loss to Pennsylvania State University. They went on to defeat Tufts University (14-13), Sacred Heart University (22-5), Haverford College (17-10), and New York University (15-12).

The epee squad posted the best record of the day with a total of 28-17 as all four members finished with winning records. In addition, a 9-0 showing against Tufts helped give Tech its one-point victory. Mika Tomczak paced the team with a 10-5 total while Lele Yu and Joanna Tong finished at 9-6 and 8-6, respectively. Zhenya Gu won the only bout she competed in, which resulted in a sweep for the team against Sacred Heart.

The foil team also picked up a sweep against Sacred Heart en route to a 23-22 ledger. Gemma Mendel posted a mark of 9-6 while Nancy Hua finished at 7-7.

The lone win of the day for the sabre squad was a 7-2 total against NYU. The margin proved to be pivotal as it amounted to a three-point advantage for the Engineers. Lynn Wang and Shauna Jin each tallied marks of 7-8, resulting in a team record of 20-25.
