Women's Fencing Takes Second at New England Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's fencing team was three victories shy of claiming its eighth consecutive New England Championship title on Sunday. Boston College took the team crown while the Engineers and Tufts University finished in a tie for second place. Overall, Tech outpaced both the men's and women's fields en route to a six-weapon team victory.

By winning 12 of 14 bouts, Shauna Jin placed third and helped lead the sabre squad to a tie for second place. In the "B" pool, Lynn Wang totaled a ledger of 11-3 while Yushin Chen went 7-4 in the "C" pool.

The foil team found itself in a tie for third with a record of 32-8. Gemmel Mendel paced MIT with a 12-2 performance in the top tier. Nancy Hua posted a mark of 10-4 as Barrette Strickland finished at 10-2.

A 12-0 performance by Joanna Tong in the "C" pool lifted the epee team to a fourth-place finish. Mika Tomczak totaled a 9-5 ledger while Lele Yu went 7-7 on the day.
