Field Hockey Improves to 4-0 With Convincing Win Over Lasell

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT tallied three goals in the game's first 11 minutes en route to a convincing, 8-0, victory over Lasell College in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday at Jack Barry Field. Leading scorer, Jessica Oleinik, paced the Engineers with three goals and an assist, as the team won its fourth straight to open the season. Lasell dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

Just three days after her dramatic, game-winning goal helped lift the Cardinal and Grey to victory on Saturday, Anna Teruya opened today's scoring in a similar fashion. Teruya took the pass from Ekavali Mishra off a penalty corner and pushed home her fifth marker of the season. Tech would double its lead on a fortuitous bounce a few minutes later, as Kimberly Barker tipped in a high-arching shot from Katie Kauffman. Another corner set up the third MIT score, with Nirupama Yechoor assisting on the first of three straight goals by Oleinik.

Oleinik would get back to work early in the second half, with an unassisted tally just over two minutes into the stanza. Mishra then collected her team-high fourth assist of the season to help Oleinik finish the hat trick five and a half minutes later.

A pair of Engineers picked up their first career goals midway through the period, as Lia DiGiovanna and Molly McShane each found the back of the net within two minutes, to push the Tech lead to 7-0. Danielle Smith rounded out the scoring off another corner as time expired.

MIT controlled the possession for most of the game, outshooting the Lasers 47-7 while also holding a 15-1 advantage in penalty corners. Keri Dixon earned her fourth win on the season, stopping all four shots she faced for her fifth career shutout. A pair of goalkeepers split time for Lasell, as Christine Thornton started the game and took the loss, allowing seven goals while making 12 saves. Erin Norton came in late and stood tall on a number of challenges by Tech, stopping six of the seven shots she saw.

MIT returns to Barry Field on Thursday for the final of its five straight home contests to start the season. The Engineers welcome Simmons College at 6:00 p.m. Lasell will host Wheaton College on Saturday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m.
