BOSTON, Mass. - MIT continued its fast start to
the 2010 campaign, notching a road win over Simmons College, 7-1,
on Thursday evening. The Tech defense stood tall all night, holding
its opponent to just one goal for the third consecutive game. The
Engineers advance to 4-0 on the season, while Simmons falls to
Sophomore Kimberly Barker did most of the damage for MIT, scoring twice in the first half and once in the second. The sophomore now leads the team with five markers in the first four games of the season. Teammates Katie Kauffman, Maddy Wharton and Molly Duffy and Danielle Smith all found the back of the net to bring Tech's final tally to seven.
MIT Keeper Keri Dixon was well protected by her defensive line, making one save and allowing just the one goal.
The MIT defense held Simmons to just seven shots, three of them on goal, while peppering the Sharks keeper with 16 shots, 11 on goal. First Year keeper Renna Smith made four saves for Simmons in 70 minutes of play. Sophomore Zoie Kaley found the back of the net, assisted by Lee Sutherland for Simmons' lone goal.
The Sharks will next travel to face off against Mount Holyoke on Saturday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m., while MIT travels to Washington College (Md.) for an 11:00 a.m. match on the same day.
