CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) recorded her first-career hat trick, eventually finishing with four goals, and sophomore Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) also added four scores, as MIT downed visiting Lasell College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday night. Playing in a driving rain throughout most of the game, the Engineers jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back to improve to 3-0 on the young 2011 campaign. Lasell falls to a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent for the second straight game, after opening the season with a loss to WPI.
Kameron Klauber (Carlsbad, Calif.) started the scoring just three minutes in, finding the back of the net on an assist from Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.). Duffy then tallied two consecutive scores, as Tech opened a quick 3-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Mackey would enter the game midway through the opening stanza and quickly go to work on the offensive end, recording three straight markers for the Cardinal and Gray, the first two on assists by Lia DiGiovanna (Massapequa, N.Y.). The freshman completed her first half hat trick late in the period, collecting her own rebound in front of the goal and pushing it home.
Duffy added her third tally early in the second while Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md.) and Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) also got in on the scoring for MIT, which controlled possession for most of the game, allowing the Lasers to get off just four shots.
Casey Landry (Peabody, Mass.) and Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio) split time in net for the Engineers, combining for the first Tech shutout of the season. Christine Thornton stopped 11 shots in goal for Lasell.
MIT will return to the field on Thursday, September 8, hosting Simmons College at 6:00 p.m. Lasell will return home to face Drew University on Sunday, September 11 at 1:00 p.m.
