CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT field hockey team kicks off the 2012 campaign on Friday, August 31 with a home game against New England College, marking the eighth time in nine years both squads will meet for the Engineers' season-opener. The Cardinal and Gray's schedule features a trio of NCAA tournament qualifiers along with a competitive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) lineup helping it build upon last year's appearance in the Elite Eight.
Following MIT's opener with New England College, the next three foes are identical to the start of last season as it hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Engineers then begin a five-game road trip at Lasell College on September 4 which continues the next day at Simmons College. On Sunday, Sept. 9, MIT heads up to Middlebury College, last year's national runner-up, for the first meeting between both programs. The Engineers travel to Gordon College on September 12 before opening NEWMAC play at Babson College on September 15.
In its return to Cambridge, MIT squares off with NCAA tournament qualifiers Nichols College (September 19) and Endicott College (September 27) in addition to conference foes Clark University (September 22) and WPI (September 29). The Engineers then visit NEWMAC rivals Wellesley College (October 2), Mount Holyoke College (October 6), and Springfield College (October 13). The tilt at Mount Holyoke is a rematch of last season's NEWMAC championship in which MIT mounted a come-from-behind overtime victory to capture its second title in three years.
The Engineers close out the regular season at home beginning with league foe Wheaton College on October 16. After a nine-day hiatus, MIT squares off with the University of New England before concluding its NEWMAC slate against Smith College on October 27.
The NEWMAC tournament begins on Tuesday, Oct. 30 with the semifinals following on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Championship game will be held at the highest seed on Sunday, Nov. 4.
