CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following the most successful campaign in program history, the MIT field hockey team was voted No. 20 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll announced earlier this week. In 2011, the Engineers captured their second NEWMAC title in three years and made their deepest run in the NCAA tournament, advancing to the national quarterfinals, in addition to setting numerous Institute records along the way.
Leading the charge for the Cardinal and Gray will be NEWMAC and NFHCA New England East region Coach of the Year, head coach Cheryl Silva. Also returning to the squad is three-time NFHCA All-America selection senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) along with NFHCA all-region honorees senior Kimberly Barker (Camden, N.Y.) and juniors Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) and Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.).
MIT kicks off the 2012 season with back-to-back home games on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1. The Engineers open the weekend against New England College at 4:00 p.m. and then host UMass Dartmouth the next day at 12:00 p.m.
