No. 20 Field Hockey Battles No. 3 Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – In the first meeting between both programs, nationally-ranked No. 20 MIT fell to No. 3 Middlebury College, 8-3, in non-conference field hockey tilt on Sunday afternoon. Senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.), junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) and freshman Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) each scored for the Engineers whose record dipped to 4-1 on the year.

MIT controlled play during the opening minutes but it was the Panthers who got on the board first after 6:12 expired and then added two more goals in the next three minutes. The hosts continued to score in bursts as they registered two goals less than two minutes apart and then found the back of the net in the 28th and 32nd minutes to claim a 7-0 advantage. Middlebury's final goal of the day came after 1:38 elapsed in the second half. Lauren Greer led the Panthers with three goals and two assists while Katherine Theiss registered a hat-trick.

Despite the deficit, the Engineers' attack persisted and ended the shutout bid in the 47th minute. On a clearing attempt deep in its own zone, Duffy intercepted a Middlebury pass and sent a blast into the cage. MIT struck again by converting on a penalty corner with just under five minutes left to play. Freshman Olivia Massey (Greenbackville, Va.) put the ball in play which was gathered by classmate Jen Hilibrand (Greenwich, Conn.) whose pass was tipped in by McNamara. McShane then capped the scoring with a solo effort right before the final horn sounded.

In net, sophomore Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio) collected 12 saves in 56 minutes of play while freshman Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) turned away two shots during 14 minutes of the first half.

The next stop on MIT's road trip will be at Gordon College on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Both squads have recorded 13 wins in a series that dates back to 1977.
