WENHAM, Mass. – Four second-half goals helped power the MIT field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Gordon College on Wednesday night. Junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) paced the Engineers with two goals and an assist as they improved to 5-1 on the year.
Junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) put MIT on the board after 7:07 elapsed by sending in a blast from the top of the arc on a penalty corner taken by Duffy. The Engineers' offensive pressure was relentless throughout the opening frame as they generated 18 shots but Fighting Scots goalie Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) came up with 11 saves to keep her squad within striking distance at the intermission.
MIT wasted little time in extending its lead as Duffy connected on a feed from senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) just four minutes into the second half. Sophomore Elizabeth Dethy (Morristown, N.J.) buried a penalty stroke in the 58th minute which was followed by sophomore Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) setting up Duffy a minute later to put the Engineers up 4-0. The final goal of the game came with 1:22 left to play when sophomore Sarah Fay (South Hadley, Mass.) found freshman Olivia Massey (Greenbackville, Va.) for the first intercollegiate marker of her career.
In net, sophomore Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio) earned the shutout without making a save as Gordon produced only seven shots on the night compared to 54 by MIT.
The Engineers' five-game roadtrip concludes on Saturday, Sept. 15 when it begins NEWMAC play at Babson College.
