SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – With four minutes remaining in regulation, sophomore Elizabeth Dethy (Morristown, N.J.) slipped a shot through the legs of Mount Holyoke College's goalie to propel MIT to a 2-1 win in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday afternoon. The victory extended the Engineers' winning streak to six and raised their ledger to 11-2 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.
The early stages were a back-and-forth affair until MIT broke through in the 15th minute courtesy of a penalty corner. Junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) put a shot on net that was stopped by goalie Anne O'Byrne (Newbury, N.H.) but senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) corralled the rebound and knocked it into the top right corner of the net. The Engineers then produced seven shots, five of which were on goal, but they could not increase their lead before the intermission.
MIT continued to control the ball in the second half, racking up five penalty corners and five shots, but Mount Holyoke recorded the equalizer in the 61st minute. On the Lyons' second penalty corner of the frame, senior Stephanie Pascual (Lawrence, Mass.) collected a pass just inside the arc from sophomore Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) and fired a shot through traffic.
The defensive battle returned before junior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) found Dethy for the game-winner with 3:59 on the clock. The Engineers nearly made it a 3-1 game moments later when Duffy got loose on a breakaway. Chasing after the ball, she managed to get a shot off before crashing into O'Byrne but the ball ended up going just wide of the net.
In net, sophomore Jenna Klein (Parma, Ohio) earned the victory without making a save while O'Byrne finished the day with eight saves. The Cardinal and Gray enjoyed a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 13-5 margin in penalty corners.
MIT concludes its three-game roadtrip on Saturday, Oct. 13 at NEWMAC rival Springfield College.
