WELLESLEY, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) selected junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) for field hockey Defensive Player of the Week accolades following MIT's 2-0 performance last week. The award is the third for the Engineers this month as senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and junior Michelle Teplensky (Somers, N.Y.) were previous honorees.
In a 6-0 win over regionally-ranked University of New England, Wharton put the Engineers on the board with a penalty stroke after three minutes expired and then earned an assist late in the second half. On the defensive end, she limited the Nor'easters to one shot which occurred in the 48th minute and a penalty corner that was awarded with eight seconds left to play while also keeping UNE's leading scorer from recording a shot. Two days later in a 10-1 victory over Smith College, Wharton set up MIT's fourth goal of the game following a penalty corner and held the third leading scorer in the NEWMAC to one goal.
MIT returns to the field on Saturday, Nov. 3 in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Championship Tournament to be hosted at Babson College. The No. 2 Engineers will face either No. 3 Wellesley College or No. 6 Mount Holyoke College at 3:00 p.m.
