CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second time in her career, MIT field hockey head coach Cheryl Silva was voted the New England East Region Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The award comes after leading the Engineers to their third NEWMAC Championship in four years and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
A 2009 honoree, Silva has compiled a ledger of 223-163-1 in 22 seasons at MIT to go along with four conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under her tutelage, the Engineers have racked up 104 NFHCA Academic Squad, 67 Academic All-Conference, 43 NEWMAC All-Conference, 27 NFHCA New England Region, seven CoSIDA Academic All-America, and six NFHCA All-America honors.
The award also marks the second occasion in which the Cardinal and Gray claimed regional Coach and Player of the Year accolades during the same season. Senior midfielder Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) helped MIT accomplish this feat in 2009 and again last month.
