Field Hockey Collects Two ECAC All-Star Awards

Senior Molly McShane and junior Maddy Wharton

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and junior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) represented MIT on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Field Hockey All-Star Team as announced by the association on Wednesday. McShane received her second straight nod while Wharton is a first-time honoree, marking the second year in a row the Engineers picked up two awards.

The program's first four-time All-America selection, McShane is also the only MIT player to be voted the NFHCA New England East Region Player of the Year twice. Last month, she was tabbed for NEWMAC Athlete of the Year honors along with her fourth straight first-team all-conference selection. McShane posted 10 goals and 17 assists for 37 points this year with her assists total tying for second-best in program history. On MIT's all-time list, she tied the record for career assists (37) and is eighth in career points (87).

Wharton's award comes after she was tabbed for All-America third team plaudits. Previously voted to the NFHCA New England East Region first team, she was recognized by the NEWMAC with first-team all-conference accolades in addition to being named the NEWMAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Wharton finished fourth on the team in goals (nine) and points (21) at right halfback while powering a defense that limited opponents to 11.2 shots per game compared to the Engineers' average of 25.
