DARTMOUTH, Mass. – A breakaway goal by senior Molly Duffy (New Providence, N.J.) 2:56 into the second overtime period lifted MIT to a 2-1 victory over UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference field hockey game on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the nationally-ranked No. 20 Engineers improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Corsairs (0-2) got on the board with 12 minutes remaining in the first half and maintained the slight edge until a solo effort by senior Michelle Teplensky (Somers, N.Y.) evened the score six minutes into the second stanza. MIT put seven shots on net during the frame and was awarded five penalty corners but could not register the go-ahead goal. Defensively, the Engineers fended off seven penalty corners while sophomore goalie Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.Y.) came up with four saves to force the extra session.
UMass Dartmouth had the upper hand in the first overtime period, as it produced five shots, three of which were turned away by Kyritsis, and earned four penalty corners. The defensive battle continued into double overtime, as Kyritsis stopped the Corsairs' only shot attempt of the frame before Duffy netted the game-winner.
Kyritsis finished the day with 13 saves after seeing 19 shots and 17 penalty corners from UMass Dartmouth.
Next up for MIT will be a home game against Gordon College on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
