NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomore Siobhan Rigby (Richmond, Va.) scored two goals in leading the MIT field hockey team past Smith College, 3-1, in a NEWMAC game on Saturday. With the win, the No. 18 Engineers improved to 12-2 on the year and 5-0 in conference play.
MIT tallied four shots, three on goal, and two penalty corners during the first 13 minutes of action before the game became a back-and-forth affair. The Pioneers' second shot on goal was stopped by freshman Jane Coffrin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), resulting in a defensive save. On the ensuing counterattack, a solo effort by junior Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) put the Engineers on the board in the 26th minute. MIT quickly increased its lead when Rigby tipped a shot over the Smith goalie's shoulder almost four minutes later. The hosts responded by cutting their deficit in half with 1:52 to go before halftime.
Smith controlled the action coming out of the break as it earned seven penalty corners that yielded one shot. On the other end, the Engineers were successful on their second penalty corner of the frame as senior Maddy Wharton (Swarthmore, Pa.) found Rigby for an insurance goal in the 54th minute. The Pioneers continued to attack, generating five shots and three penalty corners; however, sophomore goalie Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) turned away three bids during the last eight minutes to secure the victory.
Kyritsis finished with four saves as she registered her 12th victory of the season.
MIT continues its road trip on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at No. 13 Wellesley College in a battled undefeated NEWMAC rivals.
