Gordon Defeats Field Hockey, 4-2
Sept. 4, 2008
WENHAM, Mass. – A pair of second-half goals would prove not to be enough as Gordon College held on to defeat MIT, 4-2 in non-conference field hockey action Thursday. Bensey Schnip and Danielle Smith tallied the late goals for the Engineers (0-2), who were unable to overcome the 3-0 advantage they spotted the Scots.
Maggie Lafferty provided the lone first-half goal when she scored just six minutes into the contest, giving Gordon (1-2) the early lead. The Engineers had several opportunities to even the score, earning five penalty corners and getting off nine shots in the period, but were unable to come up with tying marker before the break.
The Fighting Scots applied early pressure out of the locker room, with three scoring chances in the first six minutes. Gordon broke through the MIT defense once again 7:42 into the second-half, as Abigail Walker scored off of a feed from Sarah Orlando. Veronica Pierce extended the lead to 3-0 with 13:54 remaining.
MIT began its comeback attempt just over a minute later when Schnip found the back of the net on a pass from Nirupama Yechoor. Tori Blandin put the game out of reach, scoring Gordon's final goal with 6:47 left. Smith would add to the Engineers' total with just over 2:30 remaining, scoring her first goal of the season.
Keri Dixon had 16 saves in a losing effort for MIT.
The Engineers will look to bounce back on Saturday, September 6 when they visit UMass-Dartmouth.
