CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row, MIT shutout Elms College en route to a third-place finish at Vassar College's Betty Richey Tournament. This past weekend, the Engineers fell to King's College (Pa.), 5-1, in the opener but overpowered the Blazers, 3-0, in Sunday's consolation game. Lauren McCarthy and Alex Wright represented the Engineers (1-2) on the All-Tournament Team.
Against Elms, Jessica Oleinik registered her second hat-trick in three games as MIT notched its first win of the season. She opened the scoring 16:12 into the contest when she deflected a long hit from Nirupama Yechoor. The Engineers maintained their slim lead until Oleinik converted a feed from Ekavali Mishra in the 64th minute. Wright found Oleinik for the final goal of the day with 3:16 left on the clock. In net, Alexa Herman recorded her eighth career shutout without facing a shot on goal.
In Saturday's semifinal, King's found the back of the net after 3:24 had elapsed and then added two more goals late in the first half. The Monarchs extended their advantage to 5-0 following goals in the 46th and 62nd minutes. MIT ended the shutout with 4:14 remaining in the game. On a penalty corner, Oleinik found Katie Boothe for the junior's first goal of her career. In 45 minutes of action, Herman collected seven saves as Sally Simpson closed the game with three stops.
