UMass-Dartmouth Defeats MIT, 2-0
Sept. 20, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Caitlin DiCecca provided all of the offense in UMass-Dartmouth's 2-0 victory over MIT in a non-conference field hockey game on Thursday night. The Corsairs, winners of their second straight, improved to 2-4 on the year while the Engineers fell to 3-4.
UMass-Dartmouth applied the offensive pressure from the opening whistle as it posted a trio of shots and penalty corners. After being unsuccessful in her first two scoring attempts, DiCecca found the back of the cage on a breakaway after 6:30 had expired. The game then became a battle at the midfield with both squads combining for three shots.
MIT opened the second stanza by earning its first penalty corner of the night, but Ekavali Mishra's shot was just wide of the goal. The defensive battle returned as the Corsairs held on to their slim lead. The Engineers generated some momentum late in the contest when Jessica Oleinik fired back-to-back shots in the 64th minute, however, UMass-Dartmouth netminder Liz Fitzgerald turned away both point-blank attempts. The Corsairs countered with an insurance goal by DiCecca, who converted a one-on-one opportunity, with 5:35 on the clock.
In net, Alexa Herman collected one save for MIT while Fitzgerald finished with three.
Both teams will face conference foes on Saturday, Sept. 22. MIT will travel to Smith College while UMass-Dartmouth will host Westfield State College.
