Kanaga Kills The Bison's Chances With Two Tallies To Outlast Nichols
Sept. 21, 2005
DUDLEY, Mass. - The Engineers came into Tuesday night's game against Nichols College riding the momentum of a three game winning streak, and the Bison could not slow them down at Michael J. Vendetti Field. MIT continued to roll, holding on for a 2-1 win. Senior co-captain Noelle Kanaga provided all the offensive firepower for MIT with two goals, increasing her season total to four while extending her point streak to four games.
The Engineers jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage at 22:30 of the first half when Kanaga put home a pass from sophomore Lauren McCarthy. The Bison had a golden opportunity to tie the score moments later, but MIT senior Cheryl Texin made a huge defensive save. But Nichols freshman Lauren Pettoruto responded 14 minutes later to even the score at one with her first career goal. Pettoruto capitalized on a pass from junior Whitney Shilleto on a penalty corner.
The game remained deadlocked for just five minutes before Kanaga came back for more, scoring what would prove to be the game-winner. Senior Lauren Nowierski fed Kanaga a pass and she made no mistake, beating Nichols senior goalkeeper Kara Cicchiello.
The Engineers defense tightened up in the second half, taking control of the game and allowing just two shots. Meanwhile, MIT's offense continued to pepper Cicchiello with shots, but the Bison goalkeeper was up to the challenge, stopping all nine in the second frame. After failing to get the ball past midfield for most of the second half, the Bison finally got some chances to knot the game in the final four minutes, but the last ditch effort was unsuccessful.
MIT's victory was the sixth of the season and the third straight over Nichols. MIT currently has the best record at this point of the season since the 1995 team went 13-3 before losing 1-0 to Amherst College in the first round of the ECAC tournament.
The Engineers will look to reach 7-1 when they host UMass Dartmouth on Thursday night at Jack Barry Field.
