CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of first-half goals was all Gordon College needed as it posted a 2-1 victory over MIT in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots' ledger improved to 5-4 following the win while the Engineers' record dropped to 3-6.
Gordon's attack quickly found its rhythm as it out-shot MIT, 3-1, before it found the back of the net in the 13th minute. Ariadni Niavradaki put the Fighting Scots on the board when she corralled a long rebound for her third goal of the season. The game became a defensive battle until Sarah Orlando dodged the Engineers' defense to score Gordon's final goal of the night with 34 seconds remaining in the half.
MIT countered the Fighting Scots' late goal by applying offensive pressure of its own during the second stanza. Following their fifth penalty corner attempt, the Engineers ended nearly 350 minutes of scoreless play when Cristina Stefanescu redirected a pass from Nirupama Yechoor with 7:46 left to play. MIT continued to attack, but Gordon's defense thwarted any attempts to tally the equalizer.
In net, Alexa Herman made one save for the Engineers while Chyanne Wilson collected three saves for the Fighting Scots.
Both teams will face conference foes on Saturday, Sept. 29. MIT will host Mount Holyoke College while Gordon will travel to Anna Maria College.
