CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Maggie Elbag scored off of a penalty corner with 15:48 left to lift WPI to a 3-2 win over MIT in a soggy afternoon of NEWMAC field hockey action on Jack Barry Field Saturday. WPI raised its record to 5-3 while MIT falls to 4-6. The game was the conference opener for both teams.
The teams battled at midfield for much of the first half until Anna Teruya finally broke through, scoring on a penalty stroke 26 minutes into the game. It was the eighth goal of the season for the MIT freshman. Tech's slim lead would hold up for the remainder of the half, as they outshot WPI 9-3 and held a 6-0 advantage on penalty corners in the opening stanza.
Sasha Markhovsky put WPI on the board just over a minute into the second half, scoring on a feed from Meghan Linskey. MIT would regain the lead when Danielle Smith deflected in a shot by Nirupama Yechoor in the 48th minute. Nicole Maglione scored for WPI just over a minute later to tie the game at two, setting up Elbag's game winner.
MIT goalkeeper Keri Dixon had five saves in the losing effort. Betsy Ray picked up the win in net for WPI, stopping six shots.
MIT will look to bounce back on Tuesday, September 30 when they host Endicott. Game time is at 6:00 p.m. WPI plays Nichols College at home on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
