MIT Shutout by New England College in Season Opener
Sept. 4, 2004
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The MIT field hockey team fell to New England College, 4-0, in the first game of the Engineers' 2004 campaign on Saturday. Jess Hanson led the way for the Pilgrims (2-0), tallying two unassisted goals.
Tech's offense dominated the early stages of the first half, out-shooting NEC, 10-5. The Pilgrims responded with offensive pressure of their own, as Amanda Lester posted the first goal of the game with nine seconds remaining in the half.
New England's momentum carried over into the second stanza as it took a 2-0 lead on a penalty corner. Less than one minute had expired when Megan Simula set up Brittney Vogrin for the goal. Jess Hanson put the game out of reach when she notched back-to-back goals in the 65th and 68th minutes. MIT once again had an advantage in shots (14-9), but struggled to find the back of the goal.
Goalie Alexa Herman collected eight saves for the Engineers in her first collegiate game while Jacqui Parker made 20 stops for the Pilgrims.
The next game for MIT will be on Friday, Sept. 10 at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Lasell College.
