BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College field hockey team defeated MIT 2-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup Tuesday night at MacDowell Field on the Babson campus. Babson senior co-captain Nicole Cemelli had a goal and an assist for the Beavers. With the win, Babson improved its record to 8-3, 2-1 in the NEWMAC, and MIT moved to 5-8, 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Babson's first goal came in the third minute of the game when sophomore midfielder Colleen Kelly took a shot from the top of the circle resulting in a scramble in front of the cage. The ball then caromed to Cemelli, who tipped it across the goal line for the first goal of the contest. MIT answered in the 11th minute during a penalty corner. Junior Ekavali Mishra inserted the ball to the top of the circle where teammate Nirupama Yechoor took a hard shot towards the left post. Mishra was there with her stick on the ground and deflected the ball past Babson goalie Jessica Pashos to even the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the 56th minute when the Beavers took back the lead on a penalty corner of their own. Cemelli stick stopped the ball at the top of the circle and quickly passed it to her left, where junior Jess Paladino collected the ball and took a hard shot to the left side of the cage. That gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Pashos ended the game with three saves for the Beavers, including a tremendous diving stop on a direct drive from Anna Teruya on a penalty corner late in the game. MIT sophomore goalkeeper Keri Dixon also played well in net for the visitors, finishing with nine saves.
MIT returns to action Saturday, October 11 at Wellesley. Game time is 12:00 p.m. Babson visits Connecticut College Thursday in a non-conference match at 4:30 p.m.
