CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The MIT field hockey team picked up its first NEWMAC win of the season by defeating Smith College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon. Deanna Lentz paced the Engineers' (6-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) attack with two goals. Since 1988, Tech has defeated the Pioneers (2-7, 1-2 NEWMAC) six times, three of which have been shutouts.
MIT controlled the ball in the opening minutes, receiving several penalty corners. Smith's defense successfully prevented the Engineers from getting on the scoreboard early in the frame. After back-and-forth play for most of the half, Tech was awarded a penalty corner during the final seconds of the half. Anna Ayuso ended the scoreless affair by connecting on a pass from Cheryl Texin.
MIT continued to attack in the second stanza, but Smith goalie Sydney Siegel came up with several incredible saves to keep her squad in the game. After several near-misses, back-to-back goals by Deanna Lentz in the 64th and 67th minutes sealed the win for Tech. For her first goal, she received a pass from Lauren McCarthy and then dribbled around her defender for the score. Three minutes later, Margaret Gentile set-up Lentz for the final goal of the game.
MIT goalkeeper Alexa Herman earned her second shutout of the season and finished with two saves. Sydney Siegel made 10 stops for Smith.
The next game for MIT will be on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 6:00 p.m. when it hosts Wheaton College.
