WORCESTER, Mass. - Making her first appearance on the field after serving as MIT's backup goalkeeper for most of the season, Sally Simpson posted a pair of goals in the Engineers' 3-2 overtime loss to Clark University on Saturday. Cristina Stefanescu was credited with both assists as the Cardinal and Gray fell to 4-11 on the year and 1-6 in the NEWMAC.
The Cougars (6-9, 1-6 NEWMAC) opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Chelsea Proulx took a cross off a corner from Lauren Blake. Minutes later Proulx had another chance on a ball from Blake, but her bid went wide of the net. MIT had several opportunities to even the score as it earned five penalty corners and placed three shots on goal, but the Engineers could not come up with the tying mark before the break.
MIT came roaring out of the gate in the second half with five penalty corners in as many minutes, but it still struggled to find the back of the net. Eventually the Engineers found success as Simpson posted the equalizer with 11:35 left to play. Clark regained the lead a minute later on Carley Corkum's blast that was set up by Blake. The Simpson-Stefanescu connection returned, evening the score at two with 8:16 remaining. Neither team could mount an attack during the waning minutes of regulation play, forcing the extra session.
Clark captured the win on its first scoring opportunity after 2:13 had elapsed. Following a penalty corner taken by Proulx, Blake's strike from the center of the circle gave the Cougars their first NEWMAC victory of the season.
In net, Alexa Herman turned aside three shots for MIT while Kaitlin McGrath stopped seven for Clark.
