BABSON PARK, Mass. - No. 1 Babson College scored twice in the opening half en route to a 4-0 victory over No. 8 MIT in the quarterfinals of the 2007 New England and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday. With their 13th win in their last 14 games, the Beavers improved to 14-6 overall and will now host the NEWMAC Semifinals and Finals next weekend. Meanwhile, the Engineers closed their campaign with a ledger of 4-13.
After neither team scored during the first 20 minutes, Babson netted a pair of goals in a four-minute stretch to take control of the contest. Sarah Fredlund opened the scoring when she converted a feed from sophomore Jess Paladino at the 21:19 mark. Nicole Cemelli quickly extended the Beavers advantage when she scored off an assist from Mikayla Shea at 25:19.
Babson continued to dominate the majority of play in the second half, with Michele Farley providing all of the offense. She raised the Beavers' lead to 3-0 after 2:33 elapsed. Farley then registered her second goal of the frame on a direct shot off a penalty corner with 7:12 remaining in the game. Cemelli picked up her second assist and fourth point of the day on the play, while Annie Pease was also credited with an assist. Ekavali Mishra recorded MIT's only shot on goal in the contest with four minutes remaining, but Emily Cohen turned it away for her lone save of the afternoon.
Alexa Herman finished with seven saves in her final collegiate game for the Engineers.
