CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT field hockey team's season came to an end when it fell to host Wheaton College, 4-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal game on Sunday. The loss lowered the Engineers' final record to 6-11.
Sara Dimick put the hosts on the board after just 2:45 had expired, as she carried the ball into the circle and sent a shot past Alexa Herman's out-stretched leg. The Lyons capped the first half scoring when Alisa Ardito collected a rebound of Dimick's saved shot with 20 minutes remaining. Wheaton had several chances to increase its margin, but Tech's Katie Boothe notched three defensive saves down the stretch.
Alex Block extended the Lyons' lead to 3-0 after tipping in Shea Clarke's blast in the 38th minute. Lauren Henderson completed Wheaton's scoring with 15:30 left off a scramble in front of Herman.
MIT controlled the second half on paper as it held a 10-4 advantage in shots and 8-1 edge in penalty corners. However, the Engineers' offense did not find success until Amanda Hunter converted Nirupama Yeechoor's pass with 51 seconds remaining in the game.
Boothe made four defensive saves while Herman collected four stops in net.
