Women's Gymnastics Finishes Fourth in Quad-Meet at Brown

Jan. 29, 2007

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Cornell University used an amazing 48.300 team score on the floor exercise to propel itself to victory in a quad-meet hosted by Brown University on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red secured the top spot with a score of 186.675, while the hosts grabbed the runner-up position with a 185.500 composite. Cortland State University (178.125) narrowly edged out MIT (177.550) to round out the scoring.

Brown nabbed the top two spots in the all-around competition, with Jen Sobuta (37.775) squeaking past teammate Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt (37.250) for the crown. Sobuta was buoyed by fantastic scores on the beam (9.750), the vault (9.625) and the floor exercise (9.600). MIT's sophomore sensation Julia Zimmerman was third in the all-around with a 36.550.

As if Tech's task of matching up with Div. I competition from Cornell and Brown wasn't daunting enough, the Cardinal and Gray was also faced with the assignment of competing against the Bears' freshman phenom Alicia Sacramone, a former World Champion on the vault and the floor exercise. However, the U.S. national team member proved that she is certainly not limited to those two events, as her scores on the bars (9.775) and the beam (9.850) displayed.

MIT's most complete event of the day was the floor exercise, on which the team nailed all six of its routines. Senior Lara Hershcovitch set the tone with an energizing routine to earn an 8.475, while junior Sophia Harrison (9.450) and Zimmerman (9.600) rounded out the event with Tech's two highest scores. However, the highlight of the event came when sophomore Laura Kelly executed a perfect double back for the first time in competition.

While MIT was impressive on the floor, the vault was where the Engineers actually saw their highest team score of the day with a 45.500. Junior Sarah Trowbridge (8.850), sophomore Rachel Tatem (8.700) and freshman Katie Mingo (9.100) all posted solid results, while Harrison (9.25) and Zimmerman (9.575) were once again the top scorers.

Head coach Jen Miller-McEachern had high praise for the improvement of freshman Gina Policelli on the bars and noted freshman Gillian Conahan's 9.375 on the beam, which was good enough for fourth place overall in the event.

Miller-McEachern seemed to indicate after the meet that her team is primed to turn the corner and start churning out more favorable end-results.

"Almost halfway through the season, this team is ready to make some changes in hopes of turning things up a notch," she said.

The Engineers will look to do just that on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they host Brown University and Boston University at 1:00 p.m.
