Women's Gymnastics Records Season-High Score in Victory Over Rhode Island College

Feb. 20, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Just six days after breaking the Institute record for highest individual all-around score with a 38.175, sophomore Julia Zimmerman nearly topped herself, netting a 37.925 to easily claim the all-around crown and help propel MIT past visiting Rhode Island College, 180.050-168.325, on Saturday afternoon in the duPont Gymnasium. The Engineers' point total was their highest of the season thus far.

Tech's victory was its second over the Anchorwomen in as many weeks and it pushed the team's record to 2-12. Rhode Island fell to 0-12 with the defeat.

Zimmerman's amazing afternoon was highlighted by meet-high marks on vault (9.450), bars (a personal-best 9.550) and floor exercise (9.500). The Chicago, Ill., native also tied for first-place on the beam with junior teammate Sophia Harrison, as both notched a 9.425.

The Cardinal and Gray outscored the Anchorwomen in every event, starting with the vault. In addition to Zimmerman, junior Sarah Trowbridge (9.075), sophomore Laura Kelly (9.000), and freshman Katie Mingo (9.175) all surpassed the 9.000 mark to help buoy the Engineers. Kelly's and Mingo's marks both served as personal-bests.

Head coach Jen Miller-McEachern was delighted with the way her team performed in the event, despite being shorthanded.

"It's hard to imagine this line up getting better with all of the success that it's been having this season," she said. "But once we plug in Harrison and Ashley Tran, the possibilities are exciting to think about."

Senior Tran and sophomore Alison Barnard both returned to the bars for the meet following lengthy absences and their returns surely served as confidence boosters for their teammates. Kelly was once again consistent, scoring an 8.725, while teammate Trowbridge (8.800) delivered the highlight of the event with the return of her geinger to nail a great routine.

Senior Lara Hershcovitch set the pace on the beam with a 9.150, setting the stage for teammates Zimmerman and Harrison to nail their routines and tie for the top spot.

The team once again closed with the floor exercise, with Hershcovitch (8.925) and Mingo (8.975) providing some of the top performances. An upgrade in Trowbridge's tumbling paid off with a 9.175 before Zimmerman finished out the afternoon with a 9.500.

MIT will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, when it will host Springfield College and Boston University's club team at 1:00 p.m. in the duPont Gymnasium. Rhode Island will travel to upstate New York to face Ithaca College on the same day at 11:00 a.m.
