Julia Zimmerman Honored as ECAC Division III Co-Athlete of the Week
Feb. 15, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore gymnast Julia Zimmerman was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Co-Athlete of the Week on Thursday for her performance in a quad-meet hosted by Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday, Feb. 11. The Chicago, Ill., native tied her own school record on the vault (9.600) en route to breaking the eight-year-old Institute mark in the all-around competition by amassing an astonishing 38.175. To earn her 9.600 on the vault, Zimmerman performed the first front-handspring-front-layout in the history of Div. III women's gymnastics. She also tied for first-place on the bars (9.45) and finished second in both beam (9.525) and floor exercise (9.600) on her way to capturing the all-around crown and breaking the coveted 38.000 mark for the first time in her career. The last MIT women's gymnast to accomplish the feat was Sonja Ellefson, who collected the previous school record of 38.135 in 1999. Ursinus College junior gymnast Bree Morrissey was named Zimmerman's fellow Co-Athlete of the Week, as she scored a career-best 38.000 in a weekend quad-meet hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. |
