MIT Defeats Plymouth State, Ties Castleton

Feb. 16, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's ice hockey team registered its first win of the season with a 3-1 decision over Plymouth State University and then notched a 2-2 overtime tie with Castleton State College this past weekend. Stephanie Brenman and Lauren Kazmierski each tallied three points during the road trip as the Engineers' ledger improved to 1-15-2 overall and 1-14-2 in ECAC East action.

In Friday's meeting with Plymouth State, MIT opened the scoring after 2:20 elapsed when Brenman connected on a pass from Kazmierski for a power-play goal. Exactly 57 seconds later, Barbara McCarragher set up Sara John for what proved to be the game-winning goal. The game became a defensive battle until an unassisted strike cut the Panthers' deficit in half with 6:46 remaining in the second stanza. In an equally played third period where both sides posted nine shots, the Engineers broke through with an empty-net goal by Brenman with four seconds left to play. In net, Rachel Bowens-Rubin collected 15 saves and the first win of her career.

The next day versus Castleton State, the Kazmierski-Brenman connection returned as MIT captured the lead 9:04 into the contest. The Spartans dominated the second period as they out-shot the Engineers, 22-4, and found the back of the net in the first and 15th minutes to go ahead, 2-1. MIT supplied the offensive pressure during the final 20 minutes of regulation and eventually found success when Kazmierski set up John for the game-tying power-play goal with 30 seconds left. Castleton State recorded a 10-2 advantage in shots during the extra session, but Bowens-Rubin denied every attempt as she finished the game with 46 saves.
