WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College women's lacrosse team used a 12-1 scoring run to oust New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival, MIT, by a score of 14-7 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Blue improved to 3-3 in the league and 6-9 overall, while the Engineers evened their NEWMAC mark at 3-3 and dipped to 8-6 on the year.
The teams traded goals to open the game before the Cardinal and Gray struck for two straight scores from Stephanie Leger and Katie Kauffman. After Jenny Holland picked up a score for the Blue, MIT's Kelly Duncan countered with a goal at 11:29 to give her squad a 4-2 lead. From that point on, the game belonged to the Blue, as Wellesley posted four unanswered goals to close the half and carried the momentum into the second stanza with an 8-1 run. Erica Little found the back of the net with 1:06 left to play and then assisted on Leger's goal 18 seconds later to cap the scoring.
MIT picked up two goals each from Duncan, Leger, and Kauffman as Leger added four draw controls. Little added a goal and an assist while Allison Hamilos picked up nine saves.
The Blue was led by Molly Morrow who scored four goals and added two assists to finish with six points on the afternoon. Holland also recorded four goals for the Blue, while Meagan Fuchs added a pair of scores. Caitlin Meeker and Allison Robbins each picked up a goal and an assist, while Loretta White and Kate Cushing added solo goals. Nicole Labbee led all players with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Fuchs added three draw controls for the Blue, while goalie Mary Mattia earned the win with six saves.
Both squads will continue action in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament with the quarterfinal round beginning on Wednesday, April 28. The bracket and seeds will be announced following the conclusion of regular-season play.
