BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior co-captain Libby Bryant led all players with six goals and two assists as the Babson College women's lacrosse team defeated the visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday night.
Babson (5-6 overall, 3-0 NEWMAC) held a slim 5-4 advantage at the half, thanks to two goals apiece from Bryant and fellow senior co-captain Alexa Rad. Meanwhile, senior Kelsey Presson almost single-handedly kept MIT (4-2 overall, 1-2 NEWMAC) in the game, as she scored three of her team's four goals in the opening period.
The Beavers extended their lead to 7-4 on early goals by Bryant and sophomore Ashley Platt at the start of the second half, but MIT scored three of the game's next four goals, including two by Presson, to get back to within one at 8-7.
Platt and Bryant then struck again for Babson, and first-year Stacy Hambro gave the Beavers their largest lead of the game, 11-7, with a goal at 14:38 remaining in regulation.
MIT twice got to within two over the next 10 minutes, once on a goal by sophomore Amanda Hunter that made it 11-9 and again when junior Deanna Lentz scored to make it 12-10 with 5:50 left to play. However, Bryant assisted first-year Anita Martignetti with 5:18 to go, and the Beavers would run out the clock for the majority of the final five minutes en route to the 13-11 victory.
Sophomore Jennie Williams finished with six saves in net for Babson, while sophomore Hee Jay Kang turned away nine shots in goal for MIT.
