CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's lacrosse team topped Mount Holyoke College, 17-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday. Laura Watson recorded a game-high six points on five goals and an assist for the Engineers (3-7, 2-3 NEWMAC). Kristen Cody posted both goals for the Lyons (2-11, 0-5 NEWMAC).
MIT scored eight goals during the first 10:12 of the contest, including three after 1:36 expired. Watson recorded three of the Engineers' first five goals while Stephanie Leger and Erica Little both found the back of the net three times. Lily He's unassisted strike right before the horn sounded gave the Cardinal and Gray a 13-0 lead at the break.
Off the opening draw in the second stanza, Watson drove straight to the net for her fourth goal of the day. Mount Holyoke continued to attack and found success at the 24:16 mark when Cody connected on a feed from Peggy Wefald. Samantha O'Keefe and Little posted unassisted goals within a span of 3:06 while Watson's free-position goal capped the scoring for MIT. Josephine Niepoort found Cody for the final goal of day with 2:52 on the clock.
Little notched four goals as Leger posted her first hat-trick. Stephanie Brenman racked up four groundballs, four draw controls, and two goals while Molly McCartin registered three groundballs, two caused turnovers, and an assist. Lauren Rodda bolstered the defense's efforts with two caused turnovers as Monique Squiers collected eight saves.
Wefald led the Lyons with three groundballs, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls as Ava Gottschall contributed two draw controls. In net, Gabriela Cabido Carr made three saves in nine minutes while Mimi Henry closed out the game with seven stops.
Both squads will conclude NEWMAC regular season play on Saturday, April 26. MIT will travel to Wellesley College while Mount Holyoke will host Babson College.
