April 21, 2009
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Nationally-ranked No. 13 Babson College ended MIT’s seven-game winning streak with a 16-10 decision in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women’s lacrosse contest on Tuesday. Erica Little paced the Engineers (10-4, 3-2 NEWMAC) with five goals while Kaitlyn Pettengill notched five goals for the Beavers (11-2, 5-0 NEWMAC).
Casey Flynn put MIT on the board first with an unassisted strike after 3:40 elapsed. Pettengill registered the equalizer 15 seconds later, but back-to-back goals from Little gave the Cardinal and Gray a 3-1 edge at the 23:34 mark. Babson responded with five unanswered goals to capture the lead as three straight markers by Anna Collins ignited the spurt. A solo effort by Kelly Duncan narrowed the gap to two (6-4), however free-position shots from Lindsay Bucci and Pettengill maintained the small cushion. Little posted her third goal of the frame, making the score 8-5 in favor of the Beavers at the break.
The visitors quickly doubled their margin during the first 7:24 of the second stanza. Little and Katie Kauffman found the back of the net, bringing MIT within four (11-7). This was as close as it would get as Babson mounted a 5-1 run, capped by three consecutive goals from Pettengill, for a comfortable 16-8 advantage with 6:10 left to play. Blasts by Stephanie Brenman and Flynn wrapped up the scoring for the Engineers.
Anna Collins tallied four goals, one assist, four draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Beavers. Lindsay Bucci recorded a hat-trick as Bridget McCurdy totaled two goals and two caused turnovers. Trisha Babson posted six draw controls while Ellen McCurdy and Kate Nichols each notched three groundballs. In net, Sarah Macary recorded nine saves and three groundballs.
Next up for MIT will be a home game against the University of Redlands on Thursday, April 23. Babson will host NEWMAC foe Wheaton College in its season finale on Saturday, April 25.
