Late Goal Propels MIT Past Mount Holyoke
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – MIT edged out Mount Holyoke College, 1-0, in a NEWMAC women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon. Both sides went scoreless until the 77:52 mark, when freshman Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) found the back of the net for what proved to be the lone goal.
Classmate Ashley Peter (Manhasset, N.Y.) set up the winner with a short feed into the box from the right side. Goalie Mackenzie Randall came off her line in attempt to cut off the pass, but Krishnamachar beat her to the ball and knocked in her third goal of the season.
Mount Holyoke's best chance came in the 76th minute, when junior netminder Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) made a leaping save on a shot by Hannah Yee. Wright was able to get just enough of the ball to deflect it into the crossbar and over the goal.
MIT finished with advantages in shots (23-13) and corner kicks (4-3). Wright made seven saves en route to her seventh shutout of the year for the Engineers. Randall turned away 11 shots for the hosts.
Both squads are slated to host NEWMAC matches on Tuesday. Mount Holyoke (3-8-0, 2-4-0 NEWMAC) will face off against WPI at 4:30 p.m., while MIT (8-3-2, 3-1-2 NEWMAC) will tangle with Wellesley College at 4:00 p.m.
