MIT Falls In Women’s Soccer Season Opener, 1-0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brandeis University broke open a scoreless game with a goal in the 53rd minute and made it stand up as the Judges held on to claim a 1-0 win over MIT in women's soccer action. It was the 2012 season opener for both squads.
Dara Spital broke the scoreless tie for Brandeis with what turned out to be the only goal of the contest just seven minutes into the second half. Finding herself alone and to the right of the MIT goal, she lofted a shot that just arched over the outstretched hands of MIT's senior goalie, Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) and into the upper right corner of the net.
Both teams had good scoring opportunities just minutes into the contest. Brandeis had the first chance when Spital managed to get a shot past the MIT defense, but Wright was there to make the save. Just 1:45 later junior Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y.) was able to get a try on goal, but her shot was deflected away by Francine Kofinas. Neither side was able to generate much offense in the half and it remained scoreless at the half.
MIT came out in the second half with a good offensive surge and senior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) rifled one towards the goal that was stopped by Michelle Savuto, who started between the pipes in the second half for the Judges.
After Spital's goal, MIT kept the pressure on, but were unable to find the back of the net despite eight second half shots, seven of which came after the Judges' goal. Kuo led the Engineers with four shots, with Spital getting five off to lead the Judges.
MIT will play again on tomorrow when it hosts Simmons College at 4:00 p.m. in Steinbrenner Stadium. Brandeis will also play tomorrow, hosting Clark University at 4:00 p.m.
