Three-Goal First Half Leads to MIT Win Over Manhattanville, 8-0

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A three-goal first half carried the MIT women's soccer team past Manhattanville College, 8-0 on Sunday. Senior Emily Kuo (Chicago, Ill.) totaled one assist and scored three of the goals, one of them resulting from a penalty kick. The Engineers improved to 3-0-1 with their third straight victory, while Manhattanville dipped to 2-0-2.

In the first three minutes of play,  freshman Priyanka Gaur (Austin, Texas) scored the first goal of the game, and the first in her collegiate career, after receiving a cross from the end line from Kuo. Five minutes later, Kuo, assisted by sophomore Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.), kicked the ball into the bottom corner of the net, raising the score to 2-0.

Sophomore Michelle Battipaglia (Katonah, N.Y.) increased the lead even more when she tallied another goal for MIT in the 36th minute. She shot the ball from 20 yards away and it hit off the top of goalkeeper Grace Kraemer's hands and flew into the net to put the score at 3-0.

The Engineers only got stronger in the second half of the game. Kuo scored goals four and five within five minutes of each other, the first from a penalty kick and the other when she was able to get past the last defender and sneak the ball into the net, upping the score to 5-0.

In the 82nd minute, freshman Morgan Moroi (New Albany, Ohio) directed the ball to Krishnamachar, who finished the play by burying it in the far corner of the net. Four minutes later, Moroi scored her first goal of the season when she shot from 35 yards away and the ball sank into the far left corner.

With less than one minute remaining, freshman Jennifer Ibanez (West Windsor, N.J.), who received the ball from sophomore Ashley Peter (Manhasset, N.Y.) from the middle of the field, sent the ball flying over goalkeeper, Aubrey Bachard's hands, ending the second half with a score of 8-0.

Senior Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) ended the game with just one save. MIT outshot Manhattanville, 26-2.

Next up for MIT will be a trip to Tufts University on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. The Valiants will host Trinity College that same day.
