CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row, the MIT women's soccer team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, as was announced on Monday afternoon. The Cardinal and Gray will face Rochester Institute of Technology (12-4-3) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at The College of New Jersey. The game will be played at 1:30 p.m.
MIT ended the regular season with a record of 13-2-1 and shared the regular season title with Wheaton College with its record of 8-1-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. As it had defeated the Lyons a few weeks prior, the Engineers earned the right to host the 2013 NEWMAC Tournament semifinals and finals.
On the first day of the Tournament, MIT advanced over Babson College in penalty kicks, 3-0, to make it to the finals the following day. On Sunday afternoon, the Engineers were edged by Springfield College in PKs, 4-3.
Led by seniors Rachel Dias Carlson (Albany, N.Y.), Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, Pa.), Kaitlyn Nealon (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Michaelann Rodriguez (Florence, Ala.), the Engineers will be making their fourth NCAA appearance overall, after receiving bids in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Last season, MIT made it to the Sweet Sixteen, going further in the Tournament than they ever had in program history.
