SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Jen Joseph and Ashley Marino pitched complete-game victories to lead the Springfield College softball team to 12-2 and 5-0 wins over MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action this afternoon. at Potter Field. With the wins, the Pride is now 17-10 overall, 9-3 in NEWMAC play. Tech falls to 3-7 in the conference and 4-15 overall.
In the first game, Joseph hurled five innings, giving up just three hits and two runs, both unearned. She struck out five and walked three. For MIT, Jessica Iacobucc got the start, but lasted just 1 2/3 innings. She gave up six hits and six runs, just two of which were earned. Jessica Oleinik went 2 1/3 innings, and gave up five hits and six runs, three of which were earned. She struck out one, and walked four.
Springfield had 11 hits, two each by Kasey Kelly, Tess Gagliano, and Breann Joyce. Kelly Blake and Joyce each had home runs.
MIT scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-out error by the rightfielder -- but that is all the Engineers would manage all day.
Springfield came back with six in the second inning, and six more in the fourth.
Big hits in the second for SC included a two-run single by Chelsea Bender, a two-run double by Gagliano, and a two-run home run by Blake.
Big hits in the fourth included a two-run home run by Joyce, and an RBI-double by Kelsey Dunn.
In the second game, Marino allowed just four hits, and no runs, while striking out eight and walking two.
For MIT, Iacobucci went the distance, giving up 11 hits and five runs, only three of which were earned. She struck out five and walked none.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when SC managed three runs. SC added two more in the sixth.
The Pride had four different players get two hits apiece. They were Blake,Melanie Scuderi, Allison Clott, and Ally Rivelli.
In the fourth, Clott doubled home the first run, Rivelli singled in the second, and Kasey Kelly knocked home the third.
In the sixth, Rivelli and Blake each had RBI-doubles.
